Diljit’s Regal Met Gala Look Inspired by Maharaja of Patiala —Wanted to Wear Historic $2.5 Billion Necklace, But This Happened….

Many Indian Stars such as Priyanka Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan, Sabaysachi, Diljit graced the most popular Fashion event in the World

May 6, 2025: Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh made a show-stopping debut at the Met Gala 2025, walking the blue carpet in a regal ensemble that paid tribute to his Punjabi roots and the grandeur of the Maharaja of Patiala. Styled by Abhilasha Devnani and designed by Prabal Gurung, the outfit was steeped in history and symbolism — from the Gurmukhi script on his cape to the sword and traditional tehmat he carried with pride.

But one striking element was missing.

Diljit’s team had hoped to borrow the iconic Patiala Necklace, the world-famous diamond masterpiece commissioned by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh in 1928 and created by Cartier. Weighing 1,000 carats and embedded with 2,900 diamonds, the necklace is valued today at a staggering $2.5 billion (₹21,000 crore) — making it one of the most expensive pieces of jewellery in history.

However, their request was politely declined. As per The New York Times, the necklace “sits sealed in a museum” and is not available for public use, even for events as exclusive as the Met Gala.

Instead, Indian jeweller Golecha Jewels was brought on board to create inspired accessories, including an ornate turban brooch, that echoed the grandeur of the original piece.

Speaking to NYT, Diljit said,

“It’s about carrying your identity with pride, right? That’s what I’ve always done.”

About the Look and Theme

The Met Gala’s 2025 theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, prompted many attendees to fuse heritage with haute couture. Diljit’s choice of attire merged Punjabi royal aesthetics with Black Dandyism, earning him wide praise for cultural authenticity and elegance.

Indian Presence at Met Gala 2025

Diljit was one of several Indian representatives at this year’s gala, joining stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Kiara Advani, designers Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra, Prabal Gurung, and socialites Natasha Poonawala and Isha Ambani.
