October 10, 2024: Vogue has announced that the highly anticipated 2025 Met Gala, set for May 5, will explore the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The gala will celebrate the influence and artistry of Black fashion, focusing on the role of tailoring in shaping Black identities across the Atlantic diaspora.
A star-studded lineup of co-chairs has been revealed, including actor Colman Domingo, race car driver Lewis Hamilton, and rappers A$AP Rocky and Pharrell Williams. The evening’s co-host, as always, will be Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue. In addition, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James will serve as an honorary chair for the event.
The theme corresponds with the upcoming Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which will explore the concept of the Black dandy, highlighting the importance of clothing and style to the cultural identity of the Black diaspora.
The previous year’s Met Gala, themed “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” celebrated the ephemerality of fashion and featured 50 historically significant yet fragile pieces. The event was co-chaired by Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth, with the dress code inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story, “The Garden of Time.”
Notable fashion moments from the 2024 gala included Zendaya, who wowed in two stunning gowns, and Jennifer Lopez, who turned heads in a custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture creation that took 800 hours to make and featured over 2.5 million silver beads.
Rising star Tyla also made waves at her Met Gala debut, wearing a Balmain gown intricately covered in real sand.
