‘Cursed’ Hollywood Mansion of Brittany Murphy and Britney Spears Returns to To Be Sold; Priced at $18M

From eerie deaths to paranormal encounters, the infamous Hollywood Hills mansion with a chilling past seeks new owners after a haunting transformation.

December 17, 2024: The notorious Hollywood Hills mansion once owned by pop icon Britney Spears and late actress Brittany Murphy has hit the real estate market again with an asking price of $17.99 million. Despite its recent renovation, the mansion’s dark and unsettling history continues to cast a shadow over its luxurious facade.

Nestled at 1895 Rising Glen Rd, Los Angeles, the house has long been shrouded in eerie tales. Brittany Murphy, best known for Clueless, tragically died in the home at the age of 32 on December 20, 2009, from untreated pneumonia, anemia, and drug intoxication. Just five months later, her husband, Simon Monjack, 40, was also found dead in the same residence—his cause of death, eerily identical, was attributed to acute pneumonia and anemia.

The late couple’s mysterious passing led to rampant speculation, with whispers of toxic mold contributing to their untimely deaths. Though medical examiners dismissed this theory in 2010, chilling anecdotes about the house persisted, fueling its “cursed” reputation.

Before Murphy’s ownership, Britney Spears called the Rising Glen mansion home but didn’t stay long. The Toxic singer fled the house abruptly after a terrifying paranormal experience. According to her former makeup artist, Julianne Kaye, Spears believed her reiki healer accidentally opened a “spirit portal” during a session, inviting dark entities into the house. Kaye revealed on the We Need to Talk About Britney podcast, “Britney swore the spirits were pushing her down the stairs. It scared her so badly that she checked into a hotel and never returned.”

Simon Monjack, too, recounted Murphy’s disdain for the mansion shortly before her death, telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2011, “She absolutely hated the Rising Glen house. She’d beg to stay elsewhere.”

After years of struggling to find a buyer following the couple’s tragic demise, Murphy’s mother sold the property at a massive loss for $2.7 million in 2011. The current owners, who purchased it in 2020 for $11.59 million, claim the home has undergone a “complete metamorphosis.” Listed on Zillow, the 9,400-square-foot property now boasts five bedrooms, eight and a half bathrooms, and a sleek modern renovation.

Yet, no amount of refurbishment seems to erase its spine-chilling past. Between ghostly encounters, untimely deaths, and whispers of curses, the Hollywood Hills mansion remains an iconic yet unsettling fixture in celebrity real estate.
