"Drunk on Success": Ram Gopal Varma Reflects on Career Post-'Satya'
Satya is considered one of Hindi cinema’s defining films, but Varma confessed that the film’s success blinded him to its essence. In a long post on X, he revealed that the honesty and integrity of Satya were absent in many of his subsequent films, which he criticized for their “gimmickry” and lack of substance. “I lost my vision… forgetting a simple truth that technique can elevate content but not carry it,” he wrote.

The 62-year-old filmmaker revealed that he cried while revisiting the cult classic ahead of its re-release. His tears, he admitted, were not only for the film’s story but also for what he had lost since then. “I ignored the countless inspirations it sparked… I cried in guilt for betraying all those who trusted me because of Satya.”

Varma acknowledged his missteps and vowed to spend the remainder of his career creating work that embodies the sincerity of Satya. He quoted filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, relating his struggle to replicate the brilliance of earlier successes, and wished he had set Satya as his benchmark before every project.
Actor Manoj Bajpayee, who gained stardom with his portrayal of Bhiku Mhatre in Satya, praised Varma’s self-awareness. “Not everyone can be you,” Bajpayee wrote, calling the filmmaker a rare talent with unparalleled fearlessness. Varma replied, promising a “brand new me” and jokingly inviting Bajpayee to “shoot me in the head” if he fails.
Varma concluded his emotional post with a vow to dedicate his remaining years to crafting work worthy of Satya. “Every film I make from now will reflect why I wanted to become a director in the first place.”
