Is The Kapil Sharma Show Scripted? Sumona Chakravarti Reveals Behind-The-Scenes Truth!
February 13, 2025: The Kapil Sharma Show has been a household favorite for years, with its unique blend of comedy, celebrity interactions, and hilarious punchlines. But have you ever wondered if the show is scripted or if the comedians improvise on the spot? Actress Sumona Chakravarti, who played Kapil Sharma’s on-screen wife, has finally addressed the long-standing curiosity surrounding the show’s script in a candid interview.
Speaking on Small Towns Big Stories, Sumona spilled the beans about her experience on the show, her approach to comedy, and how strictly the cast had to stick to the script.
Sumona revealed that her personal sense of humor was quite different from the kind of comedy required on The Kapil Sharma Show, and adapting to it was a challenge.

“I have my own personal sense of humour, but it wouldn’t suit the show. So for me, it was purely acting. It took a lot of time to perfect it.”
She further explained that memorization was key to delivering the perfect comic timing:
“When we received the script, I was one of those people who would sit with a pen and paper, highlight, read, and memorize word-for-word. The punchlines had to be precise, and timing was crucial. I even memorized Kapil Sharma’s lines to ensure seamless delivery.”

While many fans assumed the comedians had room for spontaneous humor, Sumona debunked the myth, revealing that the team had to strictly adhere to the script.
“Improvisation wasn’t encouraged. We had to stick to the lines and maintain the flow of the episode.”
This revelation may surprise many, as Kapil Sharma and his team often appeared to engage in impromptu banter, leaving fans to believe that a lot of the humor was off-the-cuff.
Despite the strict scripting, Sumona acknowledged the immense opportunities the show brought her. She credited The Kapil Sharma Show for giving her the recognition and financial stability needed in the industry.
“This show gave me name, fame, and money. I’ve been working for 20 years, and an actor’s life is tough. The rejection we face is unreal. The money we earn from one project has to sustain us during the periods when we’re not working.”
Sumona also pointed out the struggles of actors without industry connections, emphasizing the importance of financial planning in an unpredictable career.
While The Kapil Sharma Show brought her widespread fame, Sumona Chakravarti has had a long-standing career in television. She is known for her performances in Jamai Raja and Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, earning praise for her versatility beyond comedy.
Sumona’s revelation about the scripted nature of The Kapil Sharma Show may come as a shock to many. While the comic timing and chemistry among cast members may give the illusion of spontaneity, it turns out that every joke and punchline is pre-written and rehearsed.
However, this doesn’t take away from the hard work and talent that goes into making each episode a laughter riot. As Sumona rightly said, for her, it was pure acting—one that required dedication, precision, and timing to get right.
