Suryakumar Yadav reflected on a pivotal moment during the 2024 T20 World Cup final, when his extraordinary catch against South Africa became one of the highlights of the match.
In an appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show, Suryakumar recalled how he noticed Rohit Sharma positioned at long-on, which prompted him to sprint for the ball.
“When I ran, I noticed that the ball was quite far away. Then I saw Rohit bhai, he was at the other side, standing in long on. Then I thought I should run, catch the ball and throw it back in. Even if it was three or four runs, we would have a chance of winning. When the ball got closer, there was a chance to catch it and throw it back in. When I caught it after throwing it back inside, it was a great feeling,” Suryakumar said during a conversation at the show.
This catch, which came during the final over of South Africa’s run chase, played a significant role in India’s seven-run victory.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya was tasked with defending 16 runs against the dangerous David Miller, and Suryakumar’s effort was a game-changer. Commentator Ian Smith lauded the catch as an incredible display of athleticism, marking it as a turning point that ultimately ended India’s 11-year ICC trophy drought.
