Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s struggles continued during the first Test against Bangladesh at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, where he registered two single-digit scores of six and five runs. This marks only the fourth time in his Test career that he has failed to reach double digits in both innings of a match.
In his four Tests and five innings against Bangladesh, Rohit has accumulated just 44 runs, averaging a mere 8.80, with his highest score being 21. While his performance against Bangladesh has been underwhelming, his overall numbers across all formats against them are significantly better, with 1,307 runs in 34 matches at an average of 40.84, including three centuries and eight fifties.
Despite his recent woes, Rohit has fared well in the ongoing 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship, scoring 711 runs at an average of 41.82, including three centuries and three fifties, with a best score of 131.
In their first innings, Bangladesh faced a tough challenge, losing wickets regularly. Shakib Al Hasan (32 runs) and Litton Das (22 runs) attempted to stabilize the innings, but Jasprit Bumrah (4 wickets for 50 runs) and Akash Deep (2 wickets for 19 runs) dismantled the batting lineup. Mohammed Siraj and Ravindra Jadeja each took two wickets as well.
By the end of day three, India led by 308 runs, finishing with a score of 81/3, with Shubman Gill (33) and Rishabh Pant (12) at the crease after a shaky start that saw Rohit (5), Jaiswal (10), and Virat (17) all dismissed early.
