India’s Role as Mediator in Russia-Ukraine Conflict Backed by David Cameron

New Delhi, October 21, 2024: Former UK Prime Minister David Cameron recently highlighted India’s potential role as a mediator in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, while stressing the importance of respecting Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence. His remarks were made during the NDTV World Summit on ‘The India Century,’ where he addressed various global issues and India’s evolving role on the world stage.

India’s Credibility as a Mediator Speaking at the event, Cameron acknowledged India’s credibility and unique position to mediate in the conflict. “India certainly has the credibility. India might be in a position to mediate, but that must be done in a way that recognizes Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence,” he emphasized. Cameron’s statement comes as India has consistently advocated for peaceful and practical solutions to the conflict, promoting dialogue among all parties involved.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs, during a briefing in August, reiterated the country’s stance, stating that India supports any “feasible and mutually acceptable” solution to restore peace. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also visited Ukraine earlier this year, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to advocate for peace through dialogue.

Call for UNSC Reforms Cameron further underscored the need for reforms at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and voiced his support for India’s long-standing quest for a permanent seat. “We do need a reform of the UNSC… A permanent seat on the UNSC is something that should be India’s right in this changed world,” he asserted. He noted that India’s growing influence in global alliances like the Quad and its regular participation in G7 discussions highlight the need for India’s perspective in addressing global challenges.

India: A Shining Example When asked about India’s global position, Cameron praised the country’s progress, calling it a “shining example” of economic growth, democratic values, and commitment to green initiatives. “The world needs three things — economic growth, more democracy, and the green transition to deal with climate change. And I think India is a shining example of all these three things,” he said, applauding India’s investments in green technology and carbon reduction.

Global Support for India’s UNSC Bid India has long sought a permanent seat at the UNSC, reflecting its desire to represent the interests of the developing world more effectively. The nation’s campaign has garnered significant international support. Currently, the UNSC consists of 15 member states, with five permanent members (China, the UK, France, Russia, and the US) who hold veto power, and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.

David Cameron’s statements at the NDTV World Summit reflect growing global recognition of India’s role in international diplomacy, economic development, and environmental sustainability. With ongoing support for its UNSC bid, India is poised to take on a more influential role on the global stage.
