“It’s Been A Good Start..”: Rohit Sharma Discusses Transition Into New Era Under Head Coach Gautam Gambhir

India’s captain Rohit Sharma shared insights into the team’s new chapter under head coach Gautam Gambhir following their successful series against Bangladesh, where they clinched a 2-0 victory in the second Test at Kanpur.

This transition comes after Rahul Dravid concluded his coaching tenure by winning the T20 World Cup, marking a significant shift for Indian cricket.

Reflecting on the transition, Rohit acknowledged the challenge of adjusting to a new coaching regime. “We all keep going. Obviously, at some stage, we had to start working with different personnel. When Rahul Bhai said he was done working here, we had a fantastic time, but life moves on,” he stated. Rohit expressed confidence in Gambhir, noting, “I’ve played with him and know what sort of mindset he brings. Early days, but it’s been a good start.”

He emphasized that it wasn’t just about the runs but the number of overs Bangladesh had to face: “When they got bowled out for 230, it wasn’t about the runs we got but the overs we got at them. To make a game out of it on that pitch was a superb effort.”

Rohit admitted that this aggressive approach came with risks. “It was a risk we were willing to take because when you’re trying to bat like that, you can be bundled out for a low score. But we were ready for it even if we got bowled out for 100-150,” he noted. This fearless mentality ultimately paid off as India chased down the target comfortably, winning by seven wickets.

A standout performer in the series was Akash Deep, who took five wickets across the two Tests. Rohit praised his capabilities, mentioning the importance of developing bench strength ahead of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. “He’s been good. He has the quality and the skill. Good body as well. He can bowl long spells,” Rohit remarked, highlighting the depth in India’s bowling lineup.

India’s series victory showcased their adaptability and willingness to embrace a new era under Gambhir’s coaching. With a mix of aggression and strategy, they navigated challenges posed by the weather and a determined Bangladesh team. As they prepare for future challenges, the team’s resilience and emerging talents like Akash Deep offer promising signs for Indian cricket’s future.
