England’s Liam Livingstone is thriving in his new role as a number four batsman in the T20I setup, following a standout performance in the second T20I against Australia.
Traditionally used as a finisher in previous T20 World Cups, Livingstone has showcased his all-round abilities during the ongoing series, where he leads the run tally with 124 runs and is also the highest wicket-taker with five wickets in just two matches.
In the post-match presentation, Livingstone expressed his enjoyment of the new responsibilities that come with batting higher up the order. He mentioned, “It’s been nice… Enjoying my cricket. I do enjoy the responsibility. You can only play the hand you’ve been dealt; it’s not easy coming in at six or seven. Moving up the order has been nice; it gives you more responsibility.”
Reflecting on his journey, Livingstone acknowledged the challenges he has faced with injuries over the past couple of years, including an ankle injury in 2022 and a knee injury during his Test debut in Pakistan. He stated, “A tough couple of years, but nice to be out here with a smile on my face. It’s something that’s hard down the order.”
While Livingstone shone with the bat, it was the young talent Jacob Bethell who also made headlines with his performance. Bethell played a crucial role in forming a 90-run partnership with Livingstone, scoring a quick 44 off 24 balls and demonstrating his ability to anchor the innings and attack when needed.
Livingstone praised Bethell, saying, “He’s an incredible talent with a great head on his shoulders. To be out there batting with him, he’s a fearless kid, and it was pretty special.”
Looking ahead, Australia and England will face off in the final T20I on Sunday at Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester, where Livingstone will look to continue his impressive form.
