Jasprit Bumrah Dismisses T20I Retirement Rumors

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has made it clear that his retirement from the T20I format is “a long way away.” After India’s triumphant T20 World Cup final against South Africa in Barbados, Bumrah secured his first ICC World Cup trophy.

The skilled pacer delivered an outstanding performance throughout the tournament, showcasing his best form and contributing significantly to India’s success. Despite the fairytale ending to India’s World Cup campaign, three of India’s cricket legends—Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja—announced their retirement from T20I cricket. However, Bumrah has asserted that his retirement is not imminent.

“It’s (my retirement) a long way away. I have just started. Hopefully, it is far away now,” Bumrah stated during the felicitation at Wankhede Stadium.

Bumrah’s exceptional performance helped India end their 13-year wait for an ICC World Cup title. He was instrumental in unsettling opposition batsmen, maintaining an impressive economy rate of 4.17, and finishing as the tournament’s third-highest wicket-taker with 15 wickets.

Following India’s World Cup victory, the emotions ran high among the players, and Bumrah was particularly moved by the presence of his son, Angad. “It was unreal. Usually, I am not at a loss for words, but seeing my son brought in a flood of emotions. I never cry after games, but this time, I cried two, three times,” Bumrah shared.

During the group stage, Bumrah played a pivotal role in India’s victory over arch-rival Pakistan. In the final, he once again rose to the occasion when 30 runs were needed from the remaining 30 deliveries. Bumrah bowled two of the last five overs, conceding just six runs and taking Marco Jansen’s crucial wicket, turning the momentum in India’s favor.

For his impactful spells throughout the tournament, Bumrah was named Player of the Tournament.
