November 2, 2024: In a powerful display of solidarity, Jennifer Lopez took to the stage at a rally in Las Vegas to support Vice President Kamala Harris and strongly condemn former President Donald Trump’s remarks. The rally was sparked by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s offensive comment labeling Puerto Rico as “a floating island of garbage” during a Trump event, which provoked widespread outrage.

Lopez addressed the crowd, emphasizing that the offense extended beyond Puerto Ricans to encompass all Latinos and anyone with a sense of decency. “It wasn’t just Puerto Ricans that were offended that day. It was every Latino in this country. It was humanity and anyone of decent character,” she stated, underscoring the need for unity in the face of divisive rhetoric.
During her 15-minute speech, she expressed pride in her identity as a Puerto Rican American, highlighting her roles as a mother, sister, and entertainer. “I am Puerto Rican, and yes, I was born here, and we are Americans,” she affirmed, playfully adding, “You can’t spell American without Rican,” to stress the significance of Puerto Ricans in American culture.
Lopez praised Harris’ policies, including the extension of the child tax credit, which she argued benefit all Americans, regardless of their backgrounds. “It’s about helping you get ahead. It’s about us. All of us. No matter what we look like, who we love or who we worship or where we’re from,” she asserted, galvanizing the audience.
As she criticized Trump for fostering division, the crowd responded with enthusiasm, highlighting the impact of her endorsement amid the tight race for the upcoming election on November 5. With Puerto Rico’s population representing about 1.78 percent of the total U.S. demographic, Lopez’s support is significant as the election approaches. Her passionate call for unity and character in leadership resonated with many, reinforcing the importance of inclusive representation in politics.
