With vaccine coverage plans of states faltering in the absence of direct procurement from manufacturers, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik today took the lead to seek consensus among CMs to return to the original policy of central procurement of jabs.

In a letter to his counterparts, he said the best option right now was for the Centre to procure vaccines and distribute those to states for early coverage of all citizens.

“Many states have floated global tenders for vaccines. However, it is clear that the global vaccine manufacturers are unwilling to get into supply contracts with the state governments. Domestic manufacturers are having supply constraints. Under these circumstances, the best option is for the Government of India to procure the vaccines and distribute it among the states,” he wrote.

Informing other CMs that he had written to the Centre in that regard, Patnaik sought consensus among all states on the issue.
