Feeling Tired for No Reason? UK Doctor Warns It Could Be Thiamine Deficiency

Feeling constantly tired despite adequate rest may not just be normal fatigue—it could be a sign of thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency, according to UK-based general practitioner Dr. Sermed Mezher.

Why Thiamine Deficiency Often Goes Unnoticed

Dr. Mezher explained that thiamine deficiency is rarely tested in routine clinical practice. Early symptoms—such as fatigue, irritability, memory lapses, and sleep disturbances—often mimic general stress, aging, or other common conditions, making the deficiency easy to overlook.

The body only stores 20–30 days’ worth of thiamine, so poor nutrition, high sugar intake, excessive alcohol, and physical stress can rapidly deplete levels. Certain medications, like diuretics, may also increase thiamine loss through the kidneys.

Signs and Symptoms

Early signs of thiamine deficiency include:

  • Persistent fatigue
  • Mental fuzziness
  • Mood swings and irritability
  • Minor memory loss

In severe cases, deficiency can lead to beriberi, affecting the nerves and heart, causing muscle wasting, numbness, and even heart failure.

How to Address Thiamine Deficiency

Thiamine deficiency can be corrected with dietary changes or oral supplementation. For individuals with poor nutrition, older adults, or those dependent on alcohol, lipid-soluble thiamine supplements are recommended.

Restoring thiamine levels can improve the body’s ability to convert food into energy, often resolving chronic unexplained fatigue within weeks.
