July 7, 2025: Skywatchers across the world are in for a celestial treat this week as July’s full moon, traditionally known as the Buck Moon, reaches peak illumination on Thursday, July 10 at 4:38 p.m. EDT. While the moon will technically be full in the afternoon, the best viewing experience will occur at moonrise during dusk, when the moon appears large and golden on the horizon.
The Buck Moon, also referred to in North America as the Thunder Moon and Hay Moon, will appear full to the naked eye on the nights of July 9, 10, and 11.
Low-Hanging Beauty
This month’s full moon will be one of the lowest-hanging full moons of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. That’s because it rises opposite the sun and mirrors its position in the sky — meaning it hangs low during summer when the sun is highest.
For the best viewing, experts recommend finding a clear view of the eastern horizon — such as an elevated area, open field, or east-facing coastline — and watching just after sunset.
Sample local timings for July 10 moonrise include:
- New York: Sunset at 8:29 p.m. EDT, moonrise at 8:54 p.m. EDT
- Los Angeles: Sunset at 8:07 p.m. PDT, moonrise at 8:33 p.m. PDT
- London: Sunset at 9:16 p.m. BST, moonrise at 9:46 p.m. BST
A moonrise calculator can help observers pinpoint the best time to see the Buck Moon from their location.
An Iconic Lunar Memory
The Buck Moon’s timing also evokes memories of a historic moment in lunar exploration. On July 21, 1969, astronaut Michael Collins captured one of the most iconic photographs ever taken from space — showing Earth and the Apollo 11 lunar module returning from the moon’s surface with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin aboard. Collins, in orbit alone aboard Columbia, was the only human not in the frame.
More to Come
The Buck Moon is the seventh full moon of 2025, with five more to come this year. It follows a total lunar eclipse in March and precedes another on September 7–8. The next full moon — the Sturgeon Moon — will rise on Saturday, August 9.
Whether you’re a seasoned stargazer or just looking for a peaceful moment with the night sky, this week’s Buck Moon promises a mesmerizing sight.
