Luke Evans, the star of “The Hobbit,” recently discussed the challenges faced by openly gay actors in securing macho roles in Hollywood.
In an interview, he noted that there aren’t many gay actors who perform in the kind of strong, masculine roles that have defined his career, such as those in “Immortals,” “Fast & Furious 6,” and “Dracula Untold.”
Recalling advice from Ian McKellen, who remarked on his potential to become a “big butch star,” Evans reflected on the progress that still needs to be made in representation. He expressed disappointment that, despite the increased visibility of gay actors, there remains a scarcity of opportunities for them to take on such roles.
Currently filming a TV series called “Criminal,” in which he plays a strong, straight character, Evans was asked if he knew of other gay actors who could take on similar roles. He responded negatively, emphasizing that while there are many gay actors, few are cast in the types of roles he embodies.
Evans’ comments highlight ongoing discussions about inclusivity and the need for greater diversity in casting, particularly for LGBTQ+ performers in traditionally masculine roles.
