Manisha Koirala Celebrates Changing Landscape for Actresses in Film Industry

Actress Manisha Koirala, set to grace Netflix’s series ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,’ shares her insights on the evolving dynamics of the film industry, particularly for actresses.

In a candid conversation with ANI, Manisha reflects on her illustrious career spanning over three decades, emphasizing the diminishing concept of a limited shelf life for actresses. “When I started, I didn’t know if I could work for over 10 years. It has been almost 30-plus years now, and it’s truly a blessing to still get opportunities to work with great directors and portray meaningful characters,” she remarks.

Dispelling the notion of actresses facing age-related constraints, Manisha highlights the current era as one brimming with opportunities and diversity in roles. “The concept of actresses having a limited shelf life is no longer true. Many actresses are young, and many are of our age, doing excellent work, and portraying diverse characters. It’s a great time for all of us,” she asserts.

Turning to her upcoming project, ‘Heeramandi,’ Manisha delves into its premise, describing it as a pre-partition narrative centered around the ‘Tawaifs’ of the Heramandi. She elaborates on her character, a formidable figure entrenched in power dynamics within the ‘Shahi Mahal.’

Set against the backdrop of India’s freedom struggle in the 1940s, ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ promises to be a gripping saga encompassing love, power, revenge, and freedom. Through the lens of courtesans and their patrons, the series offers an immersive exploration of Heeramandi’s cultural milieu, poised to captivate audiences worldwide.

Scheduled for a grand premiere on Netflix on May 1, 2024, ‘Heeramandi’ marks Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s foray into the digital realm, boasting a stellar ensemble cast including Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, and Sharmin Segal in pivotal roles. With its rich narrative tapestry, the series aims to redefine storytelling paradigms and elevate the portrayal of women on screen.
