‘Moana 2’ Debuts First 30 Minutes, Filmmakers Shares Insights About Moana’s New Journey

October 29. 2024: Fans of Moana have plenty to celebrate as Disney gears up for the release of ‘Moana 2.’ At a recent press event at Walt Disney Animation Studios, filmmakers unveiled the first 30 minutes of the highly anticipated sequel to the beloved 2016 film.

Co-directors David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, along with co-writer Jared Bush, shared insights about Moana’s new journey, which unfolds three years after the original story. Hand highlighted the significance of the opening song, aiming to capture the energy of re-entering Moana’s world.

In ‘Moana 2,’ Moana embarks on a bold ocean adventure prompted by a call from her ancestors, facing new challenges including a confrontation with the formidable Kakamora tribe. The filmmakers emphasized Moana’s growth as a leader, with Ledoux Miller noting, “As you mature, you learn that there are consequences to your actions.”

Originally envisioned as a Disney+ series, ‘Moana 2’ has transformed into a full-length feature, providing an “unbelievable opportunity to tell this story on a very epic scale,” according to Bush.

Returning voice talents include Auli’i Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui, alongside other cast members from the original film. Scheduled for release on November 27, ‘Moana 2’ will also feature new original songs by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, with the opening musical number having already debuted at the Annecy Animation Festival. Fans can expect an exciting continuation of Moana’s journey!
