Moeen Ali’s retirement from international cricket marks the end of a remarkable decade-long career filled with significant achievements and personal reflections.
After announcing his decision to retire following England’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, Moeen admitted to moments of self-criticism, particularly in his batting. Despite scoring over 6,600 runs across all formats.
Moeen expressed that he sometimes felt he had “left runs out there” and could have done more with the bat. He was proud of his five Test centuries, acknowledging the challenges of batting lower down the order, but also noted the “brainfades” that occasionally hampered his performance.

At 37, Moeen stated that while he tried to emulate the discipline of a player like Joe Root, his more free-spirited approach often led him to unpredictable outcomes. Despite this, he thrived as an exciting, dynamic player, both with the bat and ball.
Moeen made his debut for England in 2014 and became a key all-rounder, contributing significantly to the team’s success in both Test and limited-overs cricket. He was part of England’s 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup-winning team and the squad that claimed the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup.
Over his career, he played in 298 international matches, scoring 6,678 runs and taking 366 wickets. He became a leading spinner for England in Tests, with 204 wickets, making him one of England’s most successful spinners.
In addition to his achievements, Moeen’s legacy will also be remembered for his versatility, humility, and his influential role in English cricket’s golden era.
