Nasser Hussain, the former captain of England, has identified two young players he believes will go on to become legends in the game of cricket. Hussain disclosed his selections, which include all-rounder Rachin Ravindra of New Zealand and star India opener Shubman Gill, in a video that was uploaded by the International Cricket Council (ICC). “I’m accompanying Shubman Gill. He had a very good third quarter and nine tenths of 2023, in my opinion. Having people like Rohit Sharma on the other end must have taught him a lot. Perhaps he just got a little sick towards the end, which caused his form to decline. He is extremely talented and will be India’s next big thing for many years to come. I hope he has a successful 2024,” Hussain remarked.
Gill scored 2,126 runs at an average of 48.31 in 47 international games this year, including seven hundreds and ten fifties. He was the leading run-scorer in international cricket at the end of this year. Gill is still getting used to T20Is and Test cricket, but in ODIs, the Punjabi batsman dominated and rose to the top of the rankings.” Gill amassed 258 runs at an average of 28.66 in six Test matches this year, including a century. 128 was his best score. Gill scored 1,584 runs with five hundreds and nine fifties in 29 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) at an average of 63.36 and a strike rate of over 105. His highest rating was 208. Gill’s 2023 T20I performance was lacklustre; in 13 innings, he scored 312 runs at an average of 26.00, including a century and fifty. His highest rating was 126*. Regarding Rachin, Hussain disclosed that he saw him during the New Zealand cricket team’s tour of England prior to the ICC Cricket World Cup this year and found his game to be appealing.
“And it was Rachin Ravindra who lit up the World Cup.” Before the World Cup, I had seen him a few times in England. He broke down the order and entered at the Lord’s. He seems like he could play. He was a revelation when given the opportunity at the top of the order. I hope he can keep improving,” Hussain remarked. With 578 runs in 10 matches at an average of 106.44, including three hundreds and two fifties, Ravindra finished as the fourth-highest run scorer of the just concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. He was one of the tournament’s biggest stars.
Rachin scored 911 runs at an average of 36.44 in 37 international matches this year, with a strike rate exceeding 110 and three hundreds and three fifties. His highest rating was 123*. This year, he also claimed 23 wickets in all formats. In his three Test matches and eighteen Twenty20 Internationals, Ravindra has primarily batted lower on the order. The performance of the all-rounder as a top-order hitter in these formats is still unknown to the fans. His ODI stats are particularly impressive, as he has amassed 820 runs at an average of 41.00 over 21 innings in 25 matches, with a strike rate of more than 108. In the format, he has three centuries and three fifties.
