January 11, 2025: Pathanamthitta, Kerala: Police in Pathanamthitta have arrested 15 individuals in connection with the alleged rape and sexual exploitation of an 18-year-old Dalit girl, a promising athlete, over the course of five years. Among those arrested are the girl's coaches, classmates, and fellow athletes, according to police statements.
The case came to light during a counseling session initiated by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) after her teachers reported significant changes in her behavior. The victim later revealed that she had been repeatedly assaulted since the age of 13, with incidents occurring across various locations.

The victim used her father's mobile phone to communicate with the accused. Police have identified 40 suspects by analyzing the phone's call and message logs, as well as information from a diary found in her possession. A total of 60 individuals are suspected to be involved, and police expect more arrests as the investigation progresses.
Five FIRs have been registered under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The arrests so far include six individuals taken into custody on Friday and nine more on Saturday.
A special investigation team led by the Pathanamthitta Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) has been formed to handle the case. Officials are coordinating with the CWC to provide counseling and psychological support to the victim.
The CWC chairman confirmed that some suspects may be located outside the Pathanamthitta district. "This is a highly unusual and complex case, requiring thorough psychological and investigative intervention," he stated.
The revelations have triggered widespread outrage and calls for stringent action against the perpetrators. As more evidence emerges, additional FIRs are expected to be filed.
Police are continuing their efforts to ensure justice for the victim, and the case highlights the urgent need for stronger protections for vulnerable individuals in sports and educational institutions.
