Revered as the daughter of the Himalayas and the embodiment of strength, purity, and devotion — Goddess Shailputri is worshipped on the first day of Navratri. Here’s her powerful story and spiritual significance.
🌸 The Divine Tale of Shailputri – Daughter of the Mountains
As Navratri begins, the first form of Goddess Durga we invoke is Shailputri, the “Daughter of the Mountains.” Her name is derived from Shail (mountain) and Putri (daughter), and she is worshipped on the first day of Navratri (Pratipada).
In her divine form, Shailputri rides a majestic white bull named Nandi, holds a trident (Trishul) in one hand and a lotus flower in the other. She is the purest embodiment of nature, calm strength, and unwavering devotion.
🕉️ The Story Behind the Goddess
Shailputri is believed to be the rebirth of Sati, the first wife of Lord Shiva. After Sati sacrificed herself due to her father Daksha’s disrespect towards Shiva, she was born again as Parvati, the daughter of King Himavan, the ruler of the Himalayas.
In this new life, she was called Shailputri and later reunited with Shiva through penance and meditation, becoming an inseparable force of divine energy. This form of Shakti represents the beginning of a devotee’s spiritual journey—rooted in faith and discipline.
