205 Indians Deported from US: New Delhi Confirms Verification Process

US military aircraft brings back Indian nationals amidst Trump’s strict immigration policies; India assures cooperation on repatriation.

February 4, 2025: A total of 205 Indian nationals, who had illegally entered the United States, were deported on a US military aircraft that departed from Texas six hours ago, according to sources. The deportees were verified by Indian authorities, reflecting New Delhi’s active participation in the repatriation process.

This operation marks the first of several planned deportation flights aimed at returning illegal Indian immigrants to their home country. The deportation was carried out using a C-17 US military aircraft, which reportedly accommodates up to 205 passengers with limited facilities onboard.

The move aligns with US President Donald Trump’s hardline immigration policies, which have already seen deportation operations targeting migrants in Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras. Trump recently commented, “For the first time in history, we are locating and loading illegal aliens into military aircraft and flying them back to the places from which they came.”

India’s Stance on Illegal Immigration

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has reiterated India’s commitment to addressing illegal immigration. “We are open to the legitimate return of Indian nationals living abroad illegally, provided proper documentation is provided and verified,” he said. This sentiment was echoed by Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, who stated, “If they are Indian nationals overstaying or undocumented, we will facilitate their return after verification.”

The operation coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the United States, his first since Trump assumed his second term as President. Trump has previously stated that Modi assured him India “will do what’s right” regarding the repatriation of illegal immigrants.

Scale of the Issue

Reports suggest that around 18,000 Indian migrants have been identified as living illegally in the US. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized its strong stance against illegal immigration, citing its links to organized crime. “We will take action to ensure a legitimate and safe return for Indian nationals,” Jaiswal added.

A spokesperson from the US Embassy in New Delhi commented, “These actions send a clear message: illegal migration is not worth the risk.” The US is intensifying its border enforcement and immigration laws under Trump’s administration.
