Strong tremors were felt early Monday morning, causing panic among residents as buildings shook across the region.
A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Delhi-NCR early Monday morning, sending residents rushing out of their homes in panic. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at 5:36 AM IST at a depth of 5 km, with its epicenter located 9 km east of New Delhi.
“Earthquake of Magnitude: 4.0, Occurred on 17-02-24, 5:36 AM IST, Lat: 28.59°N & Long: 77.16°E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: 9km E of New Delhi,” the NCS posted on X.
Strong Tremors Cause Panic Across Delhi-NCR
The sudden jolts were felt across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad, prompting many to evacuate their buildings. Reports from residents and vendors describe moments of fear and confusion as structures vibrated unexpectedly.
At the New Delhi railway station, Anish, a vendor, recounted the terrifying moment:
“Everything was shaking… customers started screaming…”
No Reports of Damage or Casualties
As of now, there have been no reports of significant damage or casualties. However, authorities have urged people to remain vigilant and follow earthquake safety protocols.
This tremor comes as part of a recent series of seismic activities in the Delhi-NCR region, which lies in Seismic Zone IV, making it prone to moderate to strong earthquakes.
Authorities Urge Caution
Following the earthquake, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has advised citizens to remain alert and take necessary precautions. Experts have also reiterated the importance of earthquake preparedness in densely populated urban areas.
