5,000 Tourists Rescued in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu Amid Heavy Snowfall

Weather Forecast: Severe Cold Conditions to Persist Until January 1

December 28, 2024: Amid heavy snowfall in Himachal Pradesh, police successfully rescued around 5,000 stranded tourists in Kullu’s Solang Nala on Friday.

The rescue mission, launched on December 27, followed reports of nearly 1,000 vehicles trapped in the popular ski resort area due to sudden and intense snowfall.

“Due to fresh snowfall on December 27, around 1,000 vehicles and approximately 5,000 tourists were stranded in Solang Nala. The Kullu Police launched immediate rescue operations and successfully relocated the tourists to safer areas,” the police stated on X.

Weather Alert and Forecast:
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy snowfall and cold waves in Himachal Pradesh for December 27 and 28. Six districts, including Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Shimla, and Kinnaur, have reported significant snowfall and road blockages.

From December 29, cold wave conditions are expected to intensify across the plains, affecting districts like Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Una, while regions such as Mandi, Kullu, and Chamba will experience freezing temperatures until January 1.

Travel Disruptions and Advisory:
Dense fog is expected in isolated areas on January 1, reducing visibility and further complicating travel conditions. Authorities have advised travelers to avoid non-essential journeys and remain prepared for road closures and harsh weather.

Temperature Trends:
Shimla recorded a temperature of around 5°C, with a slight rise expected on December 28. However, temperatures are predicted to drop sharply from December 29 onwards.

Precautionary Measures:
Residents and tourists have been urged to remain cautious, follow official updates, and stock essential supplies. Road clearance and safety measures are ongoing to minimize disruptions in affected regions.

As Himachal Pradesh braces for an extended period of severe cold and snowfall, the state remains on high alert, prioritizing safety and effective management of the weather crisis.
