A suicide note recovered from the car reveals financial ruin as the cause of the heartbreaking incident

May 27, 2025: Haryana’s Panchkula witnessed a heartbreaking tragedy late on Monday night, as seven members of a family from Uttarakhand’s Dehradun died by suicide inside their car, reportedly driven to the extreme act by insurmountable debt.

The family, identified as the Mittals, was found in their Hyundai Aura parked in Sector 27. Six of the family members were already dead when discovered, and the lone survivor, the family’s patriarch, died later in hospital.

Chilling Suicide Note Reveals Financial Ruin

Police have recovered a two-page suicide note from the vehicle, shedding light on the reasons behind the tragic event. In the note, the patriarch explained that the family was under crushing debt and had decided to take their own lives to escape the burden.

He accepted full responsibility for the family’s misfortune and asked that his father-in-law not be troubled. He also noted that his maternal uncle’s son would handle all last rites and funeral arrangements.

Family’s Final Hours

According to police, the family had gone to attend a spiritual event led by Baba Dhirendra Shastri of Bageshwar Dham earlier in the day. Instead of returning home, they parked their car in Sector 27, where they consumed poison.

Passersby noticed the motionless occupants of the car and approached the only conscious person, who revealed the family’s overwhelming debt before losing consciousness himself. Emergency services rushed the family to a private hospital, but six were declared dead on arrival. The father, initially found alive, succumbed later in another hospital.

The deceased include the man, his wife, their three children, and his elderly parents. They had been living in a rented home in Panchkula.

A Call for Mental Health Awareness

The incident has prompted calls for stronger mental health support and greater awareness around financial stress and family crises.
