32 Feared Dead as Massive 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Tibet-Read For Latest Updates

Strong tremors from the quake were felt in Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal; two aftershocks followed shortly.

January 7, 2025: A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Tibet near the Nepalese border early this morning, with tremors felt across northern and northeastern India, including Bihar, Assam, and West Bengal.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the primary earthquake was recorded at 6:35 AM. It was followed by two aftershocks:

  • Magnitude 4.7 at 7:02 AM at a depth of 10 km.
  • Magnitude 4.9 at 7:07 AM at a depth of 30 km.

Impact in India:

In Bihar, residents were seen rushing out of their homes and apartments as the tremors shook buildings. Fortunately, no significant damage or casualties have been reported so far.

Seismic Vulnerability in the Region:

Nepal and the surrounding Himalayan region are part of a seismically active zone, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide, making earthquakes a frequent phenomenon in this area.
