Asaduddin Owaisi’s party gears up to challenge Bharatiya Janata Party in key Varanasi constituencies ahead of 2027 elections.
April 9, 2026: Political activity ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections is picking up pace, with All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) preparing to contest key seats in Varanasi. The party, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, has reportedly decided to field candidates in three major constituencies—Varanasi South, North, and Cantt—aiming to make a significant impact in a region long dominated by the BJP.
For the past decade, all eight Assembly seats in Varanasi district have been held by the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies. However, AIMIM leaders claim strong grassroots support and have ruled out any alliance, signalling a direct contest. Party representatives believe their entry could influence electoral outcomes, particularly in constituencies where even marginal vote shifts can be decisive, potentially affecting rivals like the Samajwadi Party.
Among the key battlegrounds, Varanasi South, North, and Cantt remain high-profile due to their political and social significance. Issues such as the Dalmandi road project and the Kashi Gyanvapi dispute continue to keep the region in focus. Additionally, concerns over voter roll omissions in some constituencies may further shape the political landscape. AIMIM’s entry is expected to add a new dimension to the contest, making the upcoming election battle in Varanasi more competitive.
