Air India Ahmedabad-London Flight Latest Update: Plane Crashed Soon After Take-Off, 242 Onboard Including 53 British Nationals

Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashes minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad; emergency teams on high alert, multiple casualties feared.

Ahmedabad | June 12, 2025 – An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (Flight AI171) operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed shortly after takeoff this afternoon, with 242 passengers onboard, triggering a massive emergency response at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

The tragic incident occurred between 1 pm and 2 pm IST, when the aircraft reportedly lost altitude shortly after reaching approximately 825 feet. Within minutes, the plane descended rapidly and crashed near the airport perimeter.

  • Visuals from the crash site showed dense smoke rising into the sky. Over two dozen ambulances and fire brigades have been deployed.
  • Several injured passengers have already been moved to nearby hospitals. Emergency medical teams remain active on-site.
  • Access to the airport and surrounding areas has been restricted, with traffic diversions imposed to facilitate rescue operations.
  • The Ministry of Civil Aviation is monitoring the situation. Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said: “Shocked and devastated… I am personally monitoring the situation. All agencies have been directed to act swiftly and in coordination.”
  • Air India issued a brief confirmation, stating: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. We are ascertaining the details.”
  • London Gatwick Airport, where the plane was expected to land at 18:25 BST, also confirmed the incident in a statement.
  • Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran expressed deep sorrow, stating: “With profound grief, we confirm that AI171 was involved in a tragic accident. Our thoughts and condolences are with the affected families.”
    “Our primary focus is on rescue, relief, and family support. A dedicated emergency centre has been activated.”
