Air India Cancels 66 Boeing 787 Flights After Ahmedabad Crash; No Safety Concerns Found, Says DGCA

Following the deadly crash of Air India flight AI-171, 66 Dreamliner flights have been cancelled, though DGCA confirms no major safety lapses in the fleet.

June 17, 2025: Air India has cancelled at least 66 flights operated by Boeing 787 Dreamliners since the tragic crash of AI-171 on June 12 in Ahmedabad, civil aviation regulator DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) said on Tuesday. Despite the cancellations, a DGCA surveillance of the airline’s Dreamliner fleet found no major safety concerns, with all systems reportedly compliant with current standards.

The crash of Air India flight AI-171 — a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to London Gatwick — resulted in 241 fatalities among passengers and dozens more on the ground, when the aircraft slammed into a hostel complex shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.

In the days since the incident, Air India has intensified aircraft inspections and safety checks, prompting a wave of cancellations involving its long-haul Boeing 787 services. The DGCA, in its statement, acknowledged recent maintenance-related shortcomings at Air India, directing the airline to improve inter-departmental coordination to enhance safety protocols.

Flights cancelled since June 12 include:

• AI915 – Delhi to Dubai (B787-8 Dreamliner)
• AI153 – Delhi to Vienna (B787-8 Dreamliner)
• AI143 – Delhi to Paris (B787-8 Dreamliner)
• AI159 – Ahmedabad to London (B787-8 Dreamliner; formerly AI171)
• AI170 – London to Amritsar (B787-8 Dreamliner)
• AI133 – Bengaluru to London (B787-8 Dreamliner)
• AI179 – Mumbai to San Francisco (Boeing 777)

Most of these flights were cancelled either due to intensified technical inspections or unavailability of aircraft. The resumed Ahmedabad-London service under the new flight code AI-159, which replaced the now-retired AI-171, was also cancelled on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the flight and cockpit voice recorders from the crash have been recovered and are being analyzed by aviation experts. A high-level inquiry panel has been set up by the government to examine the incident and recommend future safety enhancements.

The DGCA emphasized that Air India’s Boeing 787 fleet remains operationally safe, but further preventive maintenance and protocol reviews are underway.
