Air India Flight Crash Sends Shockwaves Across Nation: What We Know So Far!
June 12, 2025: A devastating tragedy struck today as Air India flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The aircraft, en route to London Gatwick, was carrying 242 people, including 232 passengers and 10 crew members, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
The incident occurred at 1:38 PM, mere minutes after the aircraft lifted off. Eyewitness videos circulating online show the plane flying abnormally low, struggling to gain altitude before it slammed into the ground, triggering a massive explosion and fireball.
Visuals from the crash site display a horrifying scene — charred debris, thick smoke, and emergency responders rushing to rescue those trapped or injured. At least two dozen ambulances are on site, with several injured already taken to nearby hospitals.
The DGCA confirmed that the cockpit crew made a Mayday distress call moments before the crash.
In response to the crash, Home Minister Amit Shah has departed for Ahmedabad to personally oversee rescue and relief efforts.
“The entire nation is with the victims and their families. I am on my way to ensure all necessary support is extended,” Mr. Shah said in a statement.
Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“I’m personally monitoring the situation. All aviation and emergency agencies have been instructed to act swiftly and in coordination.”
Traffic around the airport area has been diverted to allow uninterrupted emergency response access.
Air India released a brief statement acknowledging the incident:
“Flight AI171 operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick was involved in an incident shortly after takeoff. We are currently assessing the situation and will provide updates as more details emerge.”
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has been tasked with determining the cause of the crash. Flight data recorders (black boxes) are expected to be retrieved from the site for analysis.
This is one of the most serious air disasters involving a Dreamliner in India in recent years. While rescue efforts continue and authorities work to confirm casualty figures, questions will be raised about potential technical issues, pilot response, and air traffic protocols.
