Annamalai Slams DMK Minister Over Thiruparankundram Remarks
BJP leader accuses Tamil Nadu government of “anti-Hindu mindset”
January 7, 2026: BJP leader and former Tamil Nadu unit chief K Annamalai on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on state Minister for Natural Resources S. Regupathy, accusing the DMK government of being “anti-Hindu” over the latter’s remarks related to the Thiruparankundram issue. Annamalai said the minister’s comments reflected a pattern of disrespect towards Hindu traditions and spiritual practices deeply rooted in Tamil culture.
Reacting on social media late on January 6, Annamalai alleged that DMK leaders, including the Chief Minister, have repeatedly mocked centuries-old religious customs and worship rights of Hindus. He further accused the ruling party of undermining judicial authority when court verdicts do not align with its political narrative, stating that DMK leaders even go to the extent of insulting court rulings that expose attempts to create social divisions.
The controversy erupted after Minister Regupathy questioned the Madras High Court verdict that upheld a single bench order permitting the lighting of a lamp atop the Thiruparankundram hill. Regupathy argued that traditions and customs should not be altered arbitrarily, drawing a comparison with cremation practices that are confined to designated crematoriums. His remarks have triggered political backlash, with Annamalai asserting that the people of Tamil Nadu would eventually hold the DMK accountable.
