Arvind Kejriwal gets interim bail, AAP thanks SC

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) expressed profound gratitude towards the Supreme Court for “upholding democracy” following the court’s decision to grant interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the contentious excise policy case. In a joint press conference held in Delhi, AAP national spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar remarked, “We are extremely grateful to the Supreme Court for upholding democracy in the country today. The interim bail has been granted under very extraordinary circumstances.”

Kakkar also issued a rallying cry for the preservation of democratic values, stating, “This is the last chance to save democracy, and we call upon citizens, media, and everyone to ensure we uphold democracy this time.”

Delhi Minister Gopal Rai shared the sentiment, noting the widespread relief and happiness the decision has brought about. “Today the Supreme Court has given a ray of hope to all those who believe in the Constitution. The entire country, including Delhi, is happy. Our party and the people of Delhi thank the Supreme Court,” Rai said.

Delhi Minister Atishi termed the court’s decision as a “victory of democracy and the Constitution,” emphasizing that the ruling was not just about Kejriwal’s interim bail but a broader triumph for truth and democratic principles. “The Supreme Court has played a major role in protecting democracy,” Atishi added.

AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj described the development as a “sign from God,” indicating a significant purpose behind Kejriwal’s release from jail. “Getting interim bail in 40 days is more than a miracle. It is a sign from God that change is needed in India. Arvind Kejriwal has the blessings of Lord Bajrangbali, and today he will come out of jail for a big purpose,” Bhardwaj stated.

The Supreme Court had earlier granted Kejriwal interim bail till June 1 in the money laundering case registered against him by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED), connected to alleged irregularities in the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy 2021-22. Despite opposition from the ED, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, the court decided in favor of granting bail, dismissing arguments that sought to prevent deviations in standard legal procedures because of Kejriwal’s status as Chief Minister.

With this significant judicial relief, Kejriwal is expected to rejoin the AAP campaign for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, with Delhi scheduled to vote on May 25.
