Comments on tracking voters inside booths trigger controversy in Chinsurah

April 4, 2026: A fresh political controversy has erupted in Chinsurah after outgoing TMC MLA Asit Majumdar made a contentious remark while campaigning for party candidate Debangshu Bhattacharya. During a rally, Majumdar suggested that polling agents observe voters closely inside booths, including the direction of their finger movement while casting votes—comments that have raised serious concerns in an already tense election environment.

The remarks come amid internal friction within the Mamata Banerjee-led party, as Majumdar was denied a ticket for the upcoming elections despite being a three-time MLA. He has since expressed dissatisfaction over the decision, alleging he was not informed in advance and even linking his exclusion to actor-turned-politician Rachna Banerjee. He also predicted electoral challenges for Bhattacharya, claiming her involvement could impact voter sentiment.

This is not the first time Majumdar has targeted Banerjee, having earlier questioned her political experience and appeal among urban voters. With West Bengal heading into Assembly elections in two phases starting April 23, the controversy has added another layer of political tension ahead of the crucial polls.
