April 9, 2026: The Election Commission of India has directed the state’s election machinery to ensure strict compliance with rules and keep all stakeholders, including candidates and political parties, informed. Officials said the move is aimed at maintaining neutrality and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process as political activity intensifies across the state.
The 2026 Assembly elections are expected to witness fierce contests across ten key constituencies, with Bhabanipur emerging as the most high-profile seat. A stronghold of Mamata Banerjee since 2011, the constituency is once again in the spotlight as she faces BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who is also contesting from Nandigram. Other crucial battlegrounds include Diamond Harbour, Murshidabad, Jadavpur, Kharagpur Sadar, Ballygunge, Kolkata Port, Bhangar, and Baruipur Paschim, all of which are expected to play a decisive role.
Major political parties, including TMC, BJP, CPI(M), Congress, and ISF, are locked in high-stakes battles across these seats.
