BIG BREAKING! Air India Flight From San Francisco to Mumbai Faces Mid-Route Engine Glitch; Passengers Deplaned in Kolkata

Flight AI180 experiences a technical snag in its left engine during scheduled Kolkata halt; fliers deboarded after four-hour delay as precaution, days after AI-171 tragedy.

Kolkata, June 17, 2025:
In another blow to Air India’s operational safety record, flight AI180 traveling from San Francisco to Mumbai via Kolkata suffered a technical snag in its left engine during a scheduled halt at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport early Tuesday. The incident prompted the airline to deplane all passengers as a precautionary safety measure.

The Boeing aircraft, which had departed San Francisco on schedule, landed in Kolkata at approximately 12:45 am. While preparing for the onward journey to Mumbai, engineers detected a glitch in the left engine, according to reports by PTI.

Passengers were kept onboard for over four hours while ground staff inspected the aircraft. At 5:20 am, the captain made an announcement, informing passengers that they would be deboarded in the interest of flight safety. Videos from the tarmac showed the aircraft grounded, with airline engineers examining the engine.

The airline is yet to issue an official statement, but sources confirm that alternate arrangements were being made for the stranded passengers.

This latest technical fault comes just five days after the catastrophic crash of Air India flight AI-171, which killed 241 people after crashing into the BJ Medical College hostel in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff. Only one passenger, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, survived that crash.

The proximity of these two incidents has raised renewed concerns about Air India’s aircraft maintenance and safety protocols, with aviation experts calling for a thorough audit of the airline’s long-haul fleet.
