Bihar Elections: Owaisi Pushes for Mahagathbandhan Alliance as BJP Alleges RJD-Congress Rift

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has formally requested six seats to join the Mahagathbandhan, intensifying pressure on the alliance. Meanwhile, the BJP claims that cracks are appearing in the RJD-Congress partnership over the selection of a Chief Ministerial face.

September 24, 2025: As the Bihar elections get closer, the political scene is getting more and more complicated. The head of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Asaduddin Owaisi, has officially asked to join the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) in the state. The BJP, on the other hand, has stepped up its campaign, claiming that there is a serious gap between important partners RJD and Congress.

Owaisi told the press on Wednesday that his party has addressed a letter to Tejashwi Yadav, the leader of the RJD, asking for six seats to run for in the next elections. “Now they have to make a choice. The people of Bihar will know who is really with the BJP if they don’t agree. “We have done everything we can,” he said, hinting at the possibility of independent competitions if the coalition doesn’t happen. This is happening in the context of the 2020 elections, when AIMIM won five seats in the Seemanchal region but lost four of its MLAs to the RJD subsequently.

In the meantime, the BJP has taken advantage of the Mahagathbandhan’s current seat-sharing standoff to mount a fierce attack. BJP leaders Ravi Shankar Prasad and Amit Malviya say that the Congress does not want to name Tejashwi Yadav as the alliance’s Chief Ministerial face. Malviya wrote on X that the recent meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) in Patna was a smart effort to make the party a “parallel force” to the RJD instead of relying on its major ally.

At the same time, reports say that the Mahagathbandhan’s internal talks are having a lot of trouble. Reports say that a recent meeting of the alliance’s coordination committee concluded without a decision. Congress wanted more seats, which caused the RJD to stop working with them. Tejashwi Yadav has started a solo campaign in the middle of all this tension, with slogans implying he may run for all 243 seats. Many people interpret this as an attempt to show his power and put pressure on his alliance partners.

The Mahagathbandhan and the NDA, which are both in power, have not yet made their final seat-sharing deals public. The Election Commission is expected to announce the election calendar soon. Voting will probably take place in October and November.
