BJP Fined Over Illegal Flex Boards
Case filed after hoardings installed on Thiruvananthapuram footpaths during PM Modi’s visit
January 24, 2026: The BJP-ruled Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has imposed a fine of ₹19.7 lakh on the party and lodged a police case over the installation of flex boards on city footpaths during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit. Based on a complaint by the corporation secretary, the Cantonment police registered an FIR against BJP district president Karamana Jayan for alleged violations of court orders and government directions.
According to the FIR, the BJP district committee erected flex boards along footpaths from Palayam Junction to Pulimoodu Junction, causing inconvenience and obstruction to the public. Police said the installations violated multiple Kerala High Court orders and instructions issued by the Local Self Government Department. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Kerala Police Act, and an investigation will be initiated.
Corporation officials said BJP leaders were directed to remove the illegal flex boards, but no action was taken. After the Prime Minister’s programme concluded, a detailed assessment was conducted, following which a notice imposing the fine was issued. The action comes amid ongoing proceedings in the Kerala High Court, which has issued strict directions to local bodies to act against illegal hoardings and flex boards erected in public spaces.
