BJP Set to Sweep Haryana Local Body Polls, Major Setback for Congress in Hooda Stronghold

BJP dominates municipal elections, securing key mayoral victories across Haryana

March 12, 2025: The ruling BJP is poised for a landslide victory in the Haryana local body elections, dealing a significant blow to the Congress, particularly in Rohtak, the stronghold of former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

BJP’s Commanding Lead

As counting progresses, BJP has either secured or is leading in nine out of ten mayoral races, including in key cities like Gurugram, Rohtak, Hisar, and Karnal. The lone exception is Manesar, where Dr. Inderjit Yadav, an independent candidate and BJP rebel, is currently in the lead.

In Gurugram, BJP’s Raj Rani has taken an unassailable lead of 95,000 votes over Congress’ Seema Pahuja. Similarly, in Rohtak, BJP’s Ram Avtar won convincingly with over one lakh votes, leaving the Congress’ Surajmal Kiloi trailing by more than 45,000 votes.

Panipat – BJP’s Komal Saini leads over Congress’ Savita Garg
Sonipat – BJP’s Rajiv Jain ahead of Congress’ Komal Dewan
Yamunanagar – BJP’s Suman leads over Congress’ Kirna Devi

Congress Faces Major Blow in Rohtak

Rohtak, considered the stronghold of Bhupinder Singh Hooda, was a high-stakes battleground. The BJP’s Ram Avtar secured a decisive victory, reinforcing the party’s growing dominance in the state.

Low Voter Turnout a Concern

Despite the BJP’s strong performance, the voter turnout was only 41%, a record low, compared to 68% in the recent Assembly elections.

Implications for Congress

The Congress’ failure to make an impact in Haryana’s urban centers signals potential challenges ahead of the 2029 Assembly elections. Even with top leaders like Hooda and Sachin Pilot campaigning, the party struggled to challenge BJP’s stronghold.
