Stone-pelting reported near Girish Park ahead of PM Modi’s Brigade rally
March 14, 2026: Clashes broke out between supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the All India Trinamool Congress near Girish Park in Kolkata on Saturday, just hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to address a rally at the Brigade Parade Ground. Eyewitnesses said workers from both parties allegedly hurled stones and shouted slogans, creating tension in the area. BJP activists claimed the attack was unprovoked and alleged that several vehicles were damaged during the confrontation.
Local TMC workers rejected the allegations and accused BJP supporters of starting the clash. They claimed BJP workers first used abusive language and threw stones, which led to the violence. Some TMC supporters also alleged that stones were thrown at the residence of state minister Shashi Panja and said several people were injured during the incident.
Police rushed to the spot and deployed a heavy force to bring the situation under control and prevent further escalation. The clash occurred shortly before the prime minister’s rally marking the culmination of the BJP’s ‘Parivartan Yatra’ ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. During his visit, Modi is also expected to launch and lay the foundation stones for development projects worth over ₹18,000 crore in the state.
