88 Candidates Named, Himanta To Contest Again
March 19, 2026: In a significant political move, the Bharatiya Janata Party has released its first list of 88 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will once again contest from Jalukbari, a constituency he has represented since 2001. His political journey includes three victories on a Congress ticket before continuing his winning streak with BJP since 2016.
Another key highlight is the nomination of Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently joined the BJP from Congress and has been fielded from Dispur, signalling the party’s effort to strengthen its position in crucial constituencies. While the BJP was expected to contest 89 seats, the announcement of 88 candidates suggests that some seats may be reserved for alliance partners. Reports also indicate that several sitting MLAs could be dropped, though a detailed breakdown of the list is still awaited.
The elections in Assam are scheduled to be held in a single phase on April 9, setting the stage for an intense political contest. With candidate selection underway and alliance dynamics taking shape, the BJP appears to be balancing continuity with strategic changes as it prepares for the upcoming electoral battle.
