BJP Victory in Delhi: Speculations Rise Over Next Chief Minister Amid Potential Surprises

BJP’s thumping victory sparks speculation over CM pick; frontrunners include Parvesh Verma and four women MLAs

February 10, 2025: It has been two days since the BJP secured a landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, ending the AAP’s decade-long reign in the capital. While the BJP has yet to announce its Chief Ministerial candidate, speculation is rife about who will take the top post. Sources suggest that the next Chief Minister of Delhi will be chosen from among the MLAs.

Frontrunners for the Top Post

Leading the race is Parvesh Verma, a two-time MP from West Delhi and the son of former Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma. Verma made headlines by defeating AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. Other names in the mix include former Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay (Malviya Nagar MLA), senior leader Vijender Gupta, newly elected Ashish Sood (Janakpuri MLA), and Uttam Nagar MLA Pawan Sharma.

Sources have hinted that a woman MLA might also be considered for the Chief Ministerial role. Among the BJP’s 48 newly elected MLAs, four women have emerged victorious:

  • Neelam Pahalwan: The first woman MLA from Najafgarh.
  • Rekha Gupta: Former Delhi University Students’ Union president.
  • Poonam Sharma: Elected from Wazirpur.
  • Shikha Roy: Defeated senior AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj in her constituency.

Caste Equations at Play

The BJP is also considering caste equations, with four MLAs from the Scheduled Caste community being potential candidates:

  • Raj Kumar Chauhan (Mangolpuri)
  • Ravikant Ujjain (Trilokpuri)
  • Ravinder Indraj Singh (Bawana)
  • Kailash Gangwal (Madipur)

Path Ahead for Government Formation

Following the BJP’s 48-seat victory in the 70-member Assembly, key party leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP President JP Nadda, held discussions to strategize the government formation.

The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place after PM Modi returns from his U.S. visit. To celebrate its return to power in Delhi after 26 years, BJP is planning a grand event, with Chief Ministers from all NDA-ruled states expected to attend.
