BJP’s Delhi Chief Minister to Forego ‘Sheesh Mahal’-Sources

BJP returns to power in Delhi after 26 years; suspense grows over the Chief Minister’s identity.

February 10, 2025: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a historic comeback in Delhi after a 26-year hiatus, clinching 48 out of 70 assembly seats—an astonishing leap from their previous tally of 8 in 2020. With this victory, the BJP has ended the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) long-standing reign, reducing the party’s count from 62 to 22 seats. Meanwhile, the Congress failed to open its account for the third consecutive election.

No ‘Sheesh Mahal’ for New Chief Minister

Sources revealed that the incoming BJP Chief Minister will not reside at the controversial ‘Sheesh Mahal,’ the Flagstaff Road bungalow in Civil Lines, which served as the official residence of AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal. The term ‘Sheesh Mahal,’ used by the BJP, was a pointed reference to alleged irregularities in the renovation of the bungalow during Kejriwal’s tenure.

Who Will Be Delhi’s Next CM?

While the BJP has yet to officially announce its candidate for the Chief Minister’s post, speculation is rife. Newly elected MLA Parvesh Verma, who defeated Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, is seen as the frontrunner. Verma, a former two-time MP and son of the late Sahib Singh Verma (a former Delhi Chief Minister), is celebrated for pulling off this electoral upset.

Other contenders reportedly include:

  • Ashish Sood: Newly elected MLA from Janakpuri.
  • Jitendra Mahajan: A three-time MLA from Rohtas Nagar.
  • Vijender Gupta: A three-time MLA from Rohini and former Delhi BJP president.

The new Chief Minister’s oath-taking ceremony is likely to occur after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his US visit scheduled for February 12-13.
