Brahmin Row Sparks Political Heat
Deputy CM Brijesh Pathak assures action over Prayagraj incident
February 18, 2026: Politics in Uttar Pradesh has intensified after an alleged insult to the Brahmin community during Mauni Amavasya in Prayagraj on January 18. Reports claim that Swami Avimukteshwaranand was prevented from taking the holy Sangam bath, while young Brahmin students (Batuks) were taken into custody and allegedly assaulted. The episode triggered outrage within sections of the community, escalating into a political flashpoint.
Responding strongly, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak said that touching a Brahmin’s shikha (topknot) is a serious offence and termed the act “sinful.” He assured that police personnel found responsible would face strict action. Pathak confirmed that those involved are being identified and that appropriate measures will be taken.
Following his statement, Batuks and their mentors visited the Deputy CM’s residence to thank him for his support. Speaking to ABP News, mentor Shyam Mishra said the visit was meant to acknowledge Pathak’s stand in defence of Brahmin traditions and cultural identity. The controversy has drawn significant attention across the state, with many local Brahmins praising the Deputy CM’s swift response.
