NEW DELHI — In a major overhaul of primary and middle-school education, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially launched a structured curriculum for Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Classes 3 to 8. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled the framework at Vigyan Bhawan on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, describing it as a “transformative step” toward making Indian students global leaders in the digital economy.
1. Key Curriculum Highlights
The curriculum is designed to be age-appropriate, focusing on logic and problem-solving before moving into technical AI concepts.
- Classes 3 to 5 (Foundational):
- Time Allocation: 50 hours annually.
- Integration: CT will not be a standalone subject but will be embedded into Mathematics and Environmental Studies (EVS).
- Focus: Logic, pattern recognition, and sequencing using “unplugged” activities like puzzles and games.
- Classes 6 to 8 (Intermediate):
- Time Allocation: 100 hours annually (40 hrs Advanced CT, 20 hrs AI Fundamentals, 40 hrs project-based learning).
- Focus: Introduction to AI tools, data-driven solutions, and Digital Citizenship (privacy, bias, and ethics).
2. Expert Development & Implementation
The framework was developed by a 10-member committee led by Dr. Karthik Raman of IIT Madras, ensuring high academic and technical standards.
- Scale: To be implemented across 32,900+ CBSE schools starting from the 2026–27 academic session.
- Resources: Teachers will be supported by specialized resource books, handbooks, and the NISHTHA training platform.
- Global Context: This initiative aligns India with countries like Finland, Singapore, and South Korea, which have already integrated AI into early schooling.
3. Why Now?
The move stems from the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes critical thinking over rote learning. Minister Pradhan noted that India currently has the third-largest AI-capable population globally, and formalizing this education in schools will ensure this lead is sustained.
