Centre Revokes Sonam Wangchuk Detention
Government cites peace efforts in Ladakh after months of unrest
March 14, 2026: The Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday announced that it has revoked the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect. Wangchuk had been held under the National Security Act after protests in Leh triggered a tense law-and-order situation in September last year. The government said the decision was taken to help maintain stability and encourage constructive dialogue in the region.
According to officials, Wangchuk was detained on September 26, 2025, following an order issued by the District Magistrate of Leh after unrest linked to demonstrations in Ladakh. He was lodged in a jail in Jodhpur during the detention period. The ministry noted that the activist had already served nearly half of the detention period prescribed under the law.
The Centre said it has been engaging with community leaders and stakeholders in Ladakh to address regional concerns. However, officials also pointed out that continued bandhs and protests had affected students, job aspirants, businesses, tour operators and tourists, impacting the local economy. The government reiterated its commitment to creating an environment of peace and mutual trust in the region.
