Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the grenade blast outside the BJP headquarters in Chandigarh, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav confirmed on Saturday.
The breakthrough came after a joint operation by the Counter-Intelligence wing of Punjab Police and the Chandigarh Police, which successfully cracked the case within days of the incident.
Two Key Perpetrators Identified
According to DGP Gaurav Yadav, while five suspects have been taken into custody, the two individuals directly involved in carrying out the grenade attack have been identified and are currently absconding.
Police have also recovered one grenade along with additional explosive material during the investigation. Multiple teams are conducting raids to apprehend the remaining accused.
ISI Link and Foreign Handlers Under Scanner
Preliminary findings indicate that the module behind the attack had links to Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), suggesting cross-border involvement.
Officials revealed that handlers based in Portugal and Germany were coordinating the operation. The conspiracy reportedly involved multiple layers, including “cutouts” and sub-modules, to avoid detection.
Authorities described the operation as a significant success, stating that it has foiled a major terror plot aimed at disturbing peace and communal harmony in the region.
Blast Near BJP Office, No Casualties Reported
The explosion took place around 5 pm on Wednesday near the Punjab BJP headquarters located in Sector 37, Chandigarh. Officials said a crude explosive device was hurled near the premises.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident.
Viral Video and Investigation Angle
An unverified video circulating on social media appears to show one individual pulling the pin of a blue-coloured grenade and throwing it, while another person records the act. The two suspects are then seen fleeing moments before the blast.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the authenticity of the video. However, CCTV footage from the area has captured individuals running across the road immediately after the explosion, which is being examined as part of the probe.
Terror Outfit Claim Under Verification
In a separate development, an unverified social media post attributed to Babbar Khalsa International claimed responsibility for the attack. Security agencies are currently verifying the authenticity of this claim.
Investigation Ongoing
Police officials have reiterated that efforts are underway to track down the main conspirators and dismantle the entire network involved in the attack.
The case highlights continued concerns over cross-border terror links and the use of proxy modules to execute attacks within India.
