‘China is Inside Our Territory’ Warns Rahul Gandhi in Parliament

Subhead: The Congress leader in Lok Sabha links the failure of ‘Make in India’ to China’s territorial presence and highlights risks to India’s defence preparedness.

February 3, 2025: In a fiery Lok Sabha speech on Monday, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi expressed grave concerns over India’s economic dependence on Chinese goods, which he termed a major national security risk. Speaking during the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address, Gandhi linked the failure of the government’s flagship ‘Make in India’ initiative to the alleged presence of Chinese forces inside Indian territory.

  • National Security Concerns: Rahul Gandhi emphasized, “Our Chief of Army Staff has stated that Chinese forces are inside Indian territory. This stems from the failure of ‘Make in India’ and India’s reluctance to invest in domestic manufacturing.”
  • Dependency on Chinese Components: Warning of defense vulnerabilities, Gandhi said, “If and when a conflict arises with China, we will rely on Chinese-made motors, batteries, and optics for our equipment.”
  • Strategic Partnerships: He advocated for strengthening industrial collaborations with the United States, claiming, “India is crucial to America’s industrial growth due to our cost-effective production capabilities.”

Gandhi dismissed the President’s address as repetitive, stating, “It was a mere laundry list of government achievements, with no acknowledgment of pressing issues like unemployment or economic challenges.”

Government’s Response

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju rebutted Gandhi’s claims, urging him to substantiate his remarks on foreign policy and China. He accused Gandhi of making “unsubstantiated and baseless allegations.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, present during the session, refrained from commenting immediately but observed the proceedings closely.

Conclusion

Gandhi’s speech underscores concerns about India’s preparedness to counter potential security threats while reigniting debates around the effectiveness of ‘Make in India.’ The session also highlighted ongoing friction between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress over economic and defense policies.
