
Cold Wave Tightens Grip Across India
IMD issues alerts as fog snowfall and frost worsen winter woes
January 7, 2026: A prolonged cold wave continues to affect large parts of India, with icy winds dense fog and snowfall in the Himalayan region dragging temperatures sharply lower across northern plains. The IMD has issued multiple alerts for cold waves frost snowfall and poor visibility in states including Delhi Punjab Haryana Rajasthan Madhya Pradesh Jharkhand West Bengal and Chhattisgarh.
Northern India remains under severe winter stress as fresh snowfall is expected in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. Delhi NCR continues to battle thick fog and biting cold with temperatures hovering around 15 degrees Celsius during the day and dipping close to 6 degrees at night. In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar dense fog cold day conditions and near zero visibility have disrupted daily life with no immediate relief in sight.
Uttarakhand has reported light snowfall in higher reaches along with frost alerts while Delhi NCR struggles with very poor air quality amid cold wave conditions. In contrast southern states may see heavy rainfall around January 9 and 10 as Tamil Nadu Kerala and Mahe brace for unseasonal showers highlighting sharp weather contrasts nationwide.
