Party calls move “politically motivated,” plans legal challenge
March 25, 2026: The Indian National Congress has been issued eviction notices for its long-standing offices in the national capital, escalating tensions with authorities. The party has been directed to vacate its premises on Akbar Road and Raisina Road by March 28. The orders also extend to the Indian Youth Congress, which has been asked to vacate its headquarters at 5 Raisina Road within the same timeframe.
Congress leaders confirmed receiving the notices and said preparations are underway to challenge them in court. Senior advocate and MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi criticised the move, calling it “illegal and politically motivated,” while asserting that the party would pursue all available legal remedies. Party officials also argued that they have been paying market rent for the Akbar Road bungalow, raising concerns over procedural fairness.
Despite shifting its central operations to Indira Bhavan near ITO, the Akbar Road property holds deep symbolic value for the Congress, having long been associated with its political legacy in Delhi. With previous attempts to re-allot the premises reportedly unsuccessful, the party is now gearing up for a legal battle, challenging the eviction orders on both procedural and political grounds.
